hear me out here. If you were given $27,000, would you buy a FRZ or a Mazda2 and modify it with what's left over? DISCUSS!

I'd like to know, because I love both of these cars with a burning passion for similar reasons.

Depends. What modifications would you focus on for the Mazda?

Toyobaru because RWD.

You could have 4 used Miatas, a Mustang v6 loaded, or maaaybe a Mustang GT.

Seconded, but were just RWD biased. If you don't like oversteer, go with the 2.

FRZ all the way. I waited years for that to come out... and now I can't afford it. But I have a Miata now at least. I've already done the spendy FWD build in the past with a Lancer and it left me unfulfilled. I mean, it was fun, but been there done that. I'd rather buy something with a large aftermarket and not have money for it immediately than to have a car with a rather small (by comparison) aftermarket with plenty of money for the tiny aftermarket. You may have to save for a while but you get better quality products out of a larger aftermarket. It's a potential kind of thing.

Is there even much of an aftermarket for the Mazda2?

I'd go with the BRS-aru 86.

FRS no question.

They are, or at least were pretty popular for auto-x. They also compete in b-spec racing I believe. While it my not be massive, there should be pretty good support if you want to make it faster.

Check out Corksport. That's just one manufacturer but there is quite a bit out there for modern Mazdas.

The Mazda2 and 3 have quite a decent aftermarket. They are solid, fun cars to begin with, plentiful, and affordable. They've captured a good chunk of the modifying scene away from those that would previously bought/had Civics. You can look at that as a good thing (tastefully modified cars going performance over style) and a bad thing (there are some terribly riced mazda3s out there).

Is there any kind of mods besides neon?

just kidding. Performance, nothing but. Competition spec struts, exhaust, gut the interior and any internal mods possible.

Tires first, of course.

Mazda 2, with a mazdaspeed 3 running gear, because torquesteer. that rounds up to about $21K, leaving me $6,000 for 205 wheels/tires, wheel arch work, diff, breaks, chasis, etc.

I have a 2012 Mazda2, complete with 5 speed, and it is the most fun car I've ever owned. Great fuel economy, people always compliment the bright green color, and it is hilariously fun to drive. The Mazda2 lives to be a fun car, and it achieves this by not taking itself too seriously. Mazda2 > Toyobaru in my book.
